Scientists in the US and UK are taking a step toward routine replacement of diseased and worn out body tissues. They are taking skin cells from diseased patients and turning them into induced pluripotent stem cells (IPS Cells). This new type of stem cell can be grown from the patients' own body cells, turned into specialised tissues, then put back into the patient as replacement parts. There is no risk of rejection, since they are the patient's own cells.
